When it’s time for you to renew or apply for a new passport, you will need a current photo within the last 6 months to submit with your application. You can get them done at a Passport Photo Center, or you can easily take them right at home. Here are some tips for taking a great Passport Photo at home.

Use a Passport Photo App

The sizing required for a US Passport is a 2 x 2 inch photo with specific guidelines for where your chin should be and the top of your head should end. If you want to take your picture at home, you need to have a good guide to ensure accuracy. Passport photo apps make this easy with outlines directly on the camera for you to use. They also provide various printing options for you. Check out this article on different passport photo apps available.

Use a Plain White or Off-White Background

The easiest way to do this is to find a white or off-white wall to stand against for your background. If you don’t have this available, you can always hang a white sheet to stand in front of for your photo. If you really want to get fancy or want to use some photo setups in the future, you can grab a photo background.

Use Good Lighting

Lightning is one of the most important things to take a good passport photo. You’ll need to make sure you are in a well-lit area without any shadows. A great option is to buy a ring light to use at home.

Take the Photo from Straight Ahead

Avoid looking to the side or taking an angled shot. While it may be more flattering for Instagram, it needs to be head-on when you apply for your passport.

Use a Neutral Expression

As tempting as it may be to smile for your passport photo, you are actually required to have a neutral expression. Keep it simple, take your photo, and get your passport.

Avoid Any Accessories

Headphones, hats, and even eyeglasses are not allowed unless you get a special note from a medical doctor stating they are required. Even if your request is approved, there are strict guidelines as to how the glasses can appear in the photo.

Check the Photo Requirements

Always refer back to current requirements for a passport photo as found on the government website. It’s always best to double-check prior to submitting your new or renewal application to avoid delays in time or increased costs associated with getting your passport.

Take as Many Photos as You Need

Are you picky with your ID photos? Not a problem when you do it right from home. You can take as many photos as you want to make sure you have a good photo to submit.
